__chapter 13 day 13 of story til end
on december 15,1982?,the soviet submarine named "red october" continued to move away from u.s.s.r. the name red october refers to the october when the red replaced the temporary government of russia and started to rule during the civil war from 1917-1922.
it surfaced. western vehicles communicate with it. the 2 opposing sides agree to meet. a rescue sub moved to meet.
ryan saw the plan. they explode a sub as if the r.o. got destroyed. meanwhile, west gives supplies and aid to r.o. the soviet inspect the wreckage and announce the r.o. was destroyed.
the crews of western and soviets meet n talk.
some of the r.o. crew that left earlier came to washington d.c. and saw many more cars. some claim "look how far u.s. went to prepare propaganda that citizens are richer." as if capitalism generates money instead of collectivism [which emptied private bank accounts and re-assigned private land [the law of leninism] for use where all workers are working for the "nation." as recorded in soviet history 1930's and repeated in china 1950's leading to disaster and famines in both places.] border officers invite soviets to stay but many prefer to return home. they fly and kgb interrogates them.
at sea [dec' 19] the soviet sub kon' followed western subs. in r.o. s. crew learned western style. western subs notice kon' using sonar.kon' captain recognized r.o. and chase and even fire... but only damage. in this battle how will r.o. escape? maybe subs can claim kon' shot at us?
clancy has a different solution:

r.o. ramd kon' only kon' sank. r.o. came to u.s. naval base for repairs. ryan preferd to go to his family.
so the newest best soviet sub came to u.s. for study. the best soviet sub captain was assigned to operate the new vessel so soviet lost their best captain and best technology not by sinking but by u.s. welcoming it and now can learn the technology of the soviets adn gain the wisdom which soviets do not have. how? by allowing the analyst to go to sea and enter the soviet sub and he was right and u.s. gained as above. lesson: sometimes not shooting can bring reward.
of course... he would not say that the kon' sunk the r.o. and one other western sub that would not be a happy ending for the buyers... nor that the analyst was wrong that would not teach the lesson that the author desired. but the story gets interesting in the 19 chapter and the western subs do not shoot at the soviets.
as if you can succeed without shooting. but lots of people like to imagine that and say do not shoot... as if they were born yesterday ad ignore the history of violated treaties... and the danger of surprises.
similarly in the later book dragon, u.s. does massive har on china then the excitement of china firing an atomic missile at u.s. which must not hit but how? that book, from year 2000, has many errors but some is exciting. do i recommend buying the books? nope i hope to give a summary of dragon so you can know what is in it
